Waterwise Systems® and Greywater Education

Waterwise Systems® has carried out an extensive education and information campaign that has reached hundreds of thousands of Australians face to face over the past five years:

  • Public speaking engagements across the State about the urgent need to conserve water for future generations have reached tens of thousands of Australians. Waterwise Systems® regularly speaks throughout Victoria, NSW and QLD about safe greywater use at home, garden and environment expos, garden clubs, community groups, and local councils.   • Municipal information bulletins and greywater information packs have been issued to every local council in Victoria and NSW;
  • Media appearances, such as The Garden Gurus, the How To channel, and Mornings with Kerri-Anne, have reached hundreds of thousands of Australians;

Other Commitments To Education

The University of Melbourne: Waterwise Systems® has funded, hosted and supervised four final year interns throughout 2005, 2006 and 2007, researching a variety of important areas relating to domestic water reuse.

Victorian Association of Environmental Education (VAEE): Waterwise Systems® was published in the VAEE’s Sustainability Education Journal, Eingana (August 2006 edition). The article, Greywater – Education is a Barrier, discusses community barriers to increased use of water reuse and recommends strategies to address the education barriers. Victoria University: Waterwise Systems® is an industry sponsor for the Sustainable House built by Victoria University students in 2005 (a fully installed Greywater Gardener 230™ is located in the house). CERES: Waterwise Systems® is a community sponsor for the Eco House, situated in CERES Community Park, Brunswick East, Victoria (a fully installed Greywater Gardener 230™ is located in the house). Waterwise Systems® presents water reuse and water conservation workshops for both primary and secondary school students and has distributed education resource packs to teachers on request in Victoria, NSW and Queensland. Waterwise Systems® – A Community Leader and Industry Pioneer

Waterwise Systems® has undertaken ten years of extensive research into how to reduce garden water use to sustainable levels.

The founders carefully researched the implications of greywater reuse in urban areas and developed strategies to achieve stunning looking gardens and big water savings while protecting the environment. This on the ground research and development program has provided the necessary knowledge for Waterwise Systems® to offer solid greywater information and educational resources to industry, the community and government, which the organisation has been actively doing for the past five years.

Waterwise Systems® has a strong commitment to greywater education and is particularly interested in developing community education programs that promote safe greywater reuse, and provide the community with all the necessary tools to reuse their greywater safely while achieving outstanding horticultural outcomes.

For example in:

  • Perth just over 50% of all water consumed by households is used on gardens and this has resulted in the government building two desalination plants, with devastating results for the environment.
  • Sydney in 2006, under stage 3 water restrictions, 20% of homes used 500,000 litres or more on their gardens each year.
  • Melbourne over the last decade an estimated top 300,000 consumption households have used a disproportionate amount of water on their gardens which has cost the other 1,400,000 million householders around 109,500,000,000 litres of drinking water per year.
